More than 40 tonnes: keel laying of SEA CLOUD HUSSAR
The largest three-mast passenger sailing vessel ever built, with more than 4,000 square metres of sail surface and 69 luxury-class cabins to be completed in Vigo, Spain by spring 2010.
Hamburg/Vigo 18th July 2008. With the symbolic act of laying the keel, the construction of the new Sea Cloud Hussar has entered the body-assembly phase. At the Factoria de Naval Marin, near the Spanish city of Vigo, two steel blocks weighing a total of more than 40 tonnes were joined and welded together. Konstantin Bissias, Managing Director of Sea Cloud Cruises, and Pablo Comesana, owner of the Factoria de Naval Marin shipyard, used the symbolic ceremony to place cent pieces under the keel for good luck. The Sea Cloud Hussar is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2010. With a length of 136 metres, a width of over 17 metres and a total sail surface of more 4,000 square metres, it is the largest three-mast passenger sailing vessel ever built. The new ship can accommodate up to 136 passengers looked after by 90 crew. Like its tradition-steeped sister vessels, the Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II, the Sea Cloud Hussar will be sailed by hand. The new ship will cruise the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. The choice of the Vigo shipyard was based on its close proximity of top-quality supply companies in the area and, more importantly, the excellent reputation of Factoria de Naval Marin. In addition to the fine regional suppliers, many German companies are providing their expertise. The engines come from MAN-Siemens (as a supplement to the sails, a particularly eco-friendly diesel-electric propulsion system will be used). Kitchens, pantries and bars are supplied by the Hamburg-based company Bohnhoff. The infotainment platform comes from Lufthansa Systems. Many special technical systems, such as the osmosis plant, also come from German companies. The interior fittings are being designed by Partnership Design, the renowned Hamburg based company that was the creative force behind the interiors of the River Cloud and River Cloud II river yachts, which went into service in 1996 and 2001 respectively, as well as the Sea Cloud II. The Sea Cloud Hussar is being built by a subsidiary of Hansa Treuhand Holding AG, based in Hamburgand marketed by Sea Cloud Cruises GmbH, also part of Hansa Treuhand Holding AG. The new Sea Cloud Hussar will be carrying the tradition of the legendary Sea Cloud into the new millennium. From a technical perspective, the vessel satisfies the strictest requirements and features environmentally friendly propulsion technology. In terms of the design, the new ship will feature clean lines, in the contemporary style, and yet will still remain true to the romantic heritage of its sister vessels. Its exterior will leave no doubts as to the close relationship between the ships: all in white, with imposing rigging and superstructures and elaborate teak decks. The bow of the ship, just like its sisters, bears the classic golden Sea Cloud eagle. The interior fittings are maintained in a classic and elegant style. Following increased market demand, a spacious fitness and spa centre will pamper passengers. The sophisticated infotainment systems in every cabin will keep passengers in touch with the outside world as they sail in luxury. “We are proud to be continuing the legend of the Sea Cloud with this new project," says Konstantin Bissias, Managing Director of Sea Cloud Cruises GmbH.
